Corporate venturing: creating mutually beneficial relationships
One way for a small business to grow faster is to form a corporate venturing relationship with another larger company in the same or similar sector. The larger company may provide funding or it may provide skills or knowledge which the smaller company does not have. It may even provide access to its marketing and distribution channels, or complementary technologies.
For the larger company, it means that it can grow and develop without having to purchase another company. A good example of what a corporate venturing relationship can produce is the development of a new product or process, perhaps involving an exclusive licensing deal between the two companies.
To help create a successful corporate venturing relationship, Westfield’s partners and associate partners often take up the position of co-entrepreneur in start-up companies. This provides the hands-on expertise and reassurance that a new company needs in dealing with larger companies.
This growth strategy is common in the United States, but is relatively new in Europe, and so far found in mainly the technology sectors. However, Westfield has established excellent links with leading multinationals.
